Each year, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS) sponsors several contests open to current members of their respective poetry society. Members of the Georgia Poetry Society are encouraged to participate in these contests, as membership in GPS automatically makes you eligible to compete as an NFSPS member. And some of the prizes (like the NFSPS Founders Award) are quite substantial ($1000 for that one).
The entry period is typically from January 1 until a deadline of mid-March. There are some 50 competitions in all, most sponsored by the various state societies. All contests have prizes, though many are modest, and some are for youth only. Still, if you enjoy poetry contests we encourage you to enter. See the state poetry contest brochure.
The Georgia Poetry Society sponsors one of these contests (#5 in the brochure). Here are the details:
The Georgia Poetry Society Award. Administered by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS), this contest is sponsored by the Georgia Poetry Society and for NFSPS members only (your GPS membership automatically qualifies you as an NFSPS member). Subject: Life in the Future, beyond Earth or on it. Form: Any Rhyming Form, slant acceptable, no nonce forms, identify form on entry, 40 line limit.
1st Prize: $150 || 2nd Prize: $75 || 3rd Prize: $25
